One person has been taken to hospital following a water-related incident in Tauranga.

Emergency services were called to Papamoa Beach, near Maranui Street, just after 3am after a member of the public reported hearing someone in the water calling for help.

A police spokesperson says someone was discovered in the water when officers arrived at the scene.

Police say it is unclear what the person was doing in the water.

The person was assessed by St John and transported to Tauranga Hospital in a moderate condition.

St John’s website says one vehicle attended the water incident.
