Free cycle events to navigate Tauranga safely

People in Tauranga are being encouraged to cycle around the city.

Tauranga City Council says "it’s time to cycle with Travel Safe’s new February to April calendar of free cycling activities for riders of all levels across Tauranga and the Western Bay".

Formerly February’s Bike Month, the extended Time to Cycle event calendar means thrice the fun with even more opportunities to gain skills and confidence, and learn to navigate the city safely by bike.

Travel Safe team leader Sonia Lynds says riding a bike is fantastic for fun, fitness, and friendship.

“People ride bikes for a multitude of reasons and cycling has so many benefits. It’s healthy, environmentally friendly, and brings people a lot of happiness. It’s also an awesome alternative to get to work or school, and often a lot quicker than you think.

“As well as having fun, Time to Cycle is all about supporting and upskilling our community to cycle safely through education, knowledge of safer routes, and encouraging regular bike maintenance.”

Travel Safe adult cycling educator Buddy Meyer will be leading the Guided Urban Rides again this year, and says Time to Cycle presents a perfect opportunity to explore Tauranga in a safe and supportive environment.

“Tauranga has a lot of new cycling infrastructure like two-way cycleways and shared-paths, and a big network of lesser-known off-road paths and trails that connect suburbs, neighbourhoods, and key destinations,” says Buddy.

“Time to Cycle highlights the safe use of these with events like the historic rides, bike to work, and cycle tours. They offer a chance for riders to check out some new areas, meet some new people, and ride with confidence.”

The calendar caters for riders of all levels and ages with events like learn to ride beginner bike skills and adult cycle skills courses, hands-on bike maintenance education, and fun activities for families and children.

The popularity of e-bikes continues to rise, and they are welcome at most Time to Cycle events.

There are even e-bike specific activities like e-bike skills courses, and an e-bike maintenance night.

Spaces are limited and will fill up quickly so check out the full calendar and register today at www.mytauranga.co.nz/timetocycle.

out of TCC? How many staff, what pay rates? And are any 'educators' going to tell cyclists they should respect the speed in a cycle lane, would actually mean considering other users crossing the lane, with a bike bearing down on them at a good 30k/hr. And he wasn't going to slow down, stop, or give way, or go around, an elderly person who could not, it seemed, walk fast. The bike may well be allowed in the bike lane, but so is the pedestrian crossing it from a parked car to the pedestrian footpath.

what a great idea

Haven't seen a bike on the Cameron road cycle footpath yet other than the school kids. watched a guy the other day come off the motorway and cycled all the way to Greerton on the road he still beat me tho and that was 11am,

Hmmm

Just watch the brain dead, cycling in the bus lanes without care for the millions spent to keep them safely OFF the road. The gold plated cycle lanes are only a metre or two away, but these nuts have rights to the roading that was never built or designed for them. Just one or two brain dead individuals of course... There's absolutely nothing wrong with putting your life in the hands of others, after all, everyone else is wrong.

Avoid Cameron Road

That is quite simply the worst road setup I have seen in my life time, the worst you can do for the most money.
But the best part is in ALL my trips since it was finished I HAVE SEEN ZERO bikes on it.
Just special.
Actually I think it could have had more lights and crossings.
Like Bureta shopping, 3 crossings out of 4 roads on the roundabout, yeah thats a bute TCC

bike complaints

Think of it this way, every person on a bike is one less person sitting in front of you in traffic and one less person to take your parking space at your destination - People complaining "I've never seen bikes in the bike lane!" That's THE POINT! Bike don't get stuck in traffic they just zip by and are gone... That's why we build safer bike lanes to encourage more people to do it, you might not want or be able to use a bike, but everyone else who can and does shouldn't have to go without because of YOU - If my taxes/rates are going to pay for the damn road without question, then they should damn well pay for the bike lanes and other means of public transport as well!

'By This Guy' gets it. Exactly what he said.

okay so i'll stop registering my car then, since I too pay taxes from income tax to rates to roads and bicycle lanes, licensing fees (pre free rebooking for sitting licenses) petrol taxes, wof charges, registration, gst... as a motorist why should i pay extras that cyclists get for free in the same place exactly? why dont cyclists have to get a license (should have their own class), register their bicycles (for ownership/accountability) and have their bicycles inspected regularly for faults and defects (to keep everyone "safe"). So I stopped paying my vehicle fees because others on the road get it free.
