Periods of heavy rain are expected to continue in the Coromandel Peninsula and Bay of Plenty until tomorrow.

In an updated weather alert, the MetService says heavy rain watches are in place for the Great Barrier Island, Coromandel Peninsula and the Bay of Plenty.

"There is a risk of localised heavy rain and downpours for northern parts of the North Island.

"A very moist air mass affects the north of the North Island, with a shallow low embedded along a front expected to move across the region from the west today and tomorrow morning.

"Please stay up to date with the latest forecasts in case changes are made."

Heavy Rain Watch lifted for Northland south of Dargaville, Auckland excluding Great Barrier Island: The risk of heavy rain has now passed and the Watch is lifted.
