A planned housing development in Katikati for older people on limited incomes has been benefited by a garden fundraiser.

A garden party held on February 17 has raised $7,400 for the Abbeyfield Western Bay of Plenty charity.

Around 100 guests from Tauranga and Katikati enjoyed sunny weather and cocktails and canapés while exploring the stunning setting of a beautiful rural Hot Springs Road garden in Katikati.

While listening to live music provided by Sue Towler and The Old Notes, the event raised funds towards building an Abbeyfield House in Katikati.

Guests, who were transported from Katikati township to the Hot Springs Road venue also had the opportunity to purchase plants and craft and take part in an entertaining auction.

Abbeyfield builds shared, supported housing for older people with limited means. Abbeyfield Western Bay of Plenty Incorporated is working with Abbeyfield New Zealand to establish an Abbeyfield house in Katikati for 14 residents.

A site has been purchased in Katikati and fundraising for the house is under way. The committee has a passionate belief that older people, particularly those who are on limited incomes and may be lonely, should have access to affordable, safe, purpose-built accommodation.

Abbeyfield chair, Carole Parker, says that the afternoon was a great success and she was delighted with the support shown for the cause.

"We are well on our way to raising the funds we need to build our Abbeyfield House, but we are still looking for some substantial funding,” says Carole.

“A special thank you to the musicians, hosts of the garden, guests, sponsors, auctioneer and volunteers, as this fundraising event would not have been possible without them.”
