A 6.7M has struck a remote part of northern Papua New Guinea on Sunday morning.
The NWS Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Honolulu initially reported the earthquake as having a preliminary magnitude of 7.0, and occurring at 9.22am NZ time, Sunday March 24.
The quake is reported to have hit at a depth of approximately 35 km.
"Based on all available data, there is no tsunami threat from this earthquake," says an NWS Pacific Tsunami Warning Center Honolulu spokesperson.
The U.S. Geological Survey says the epicentre was 32 km east-north-east of the small settlement of Ambunti, and 88 km southwest of Wewak, a town of 25,000 people that serves as the capital of Papua New Guinea's East Sepik province.
