Fire and Emergency New Zealand crews are fighting an uncontained fire on Putauaki (Mount Edgecumbe).

Ten fire crews and two helicopters are battling a large, uncontained fire in a pine forest on Putauaki (Mount Edgecumbe).

A Fire and Emergency spokesperson said crews in the Bay of Plenty responded to the estimated 100m by 100m blaze at about 2pm.

“Initially, two fire engines, a rural unit, and a water tanker were dispatched.”

Brigades from Kawerau, Edgecumbe, Eastern Bay of Plenty, Rotoma were at the scene.

Once there, the crews reported that the fire was located in the pine forest, and a third alarm was activated.

“Now 10 fire trucks and two helicopters are in attendance,” the spokesperson said.

“The fire is not contained.”

Fire and Emergency had not been informed of any risk to the public.
