Five taken to hospital after SH2, Waihī crash

7.20pm update:  Five people have been transported to hospital following a serious crash on State Highway 2, near Tauranga Road in Waihī.

One person is in a critical condition, one is in a serious condition and three others are moderately injured, a Hato Hone St John spokesperson said.

The crash was reported shortly after 5.30pm.

Hato Hone St John sent five ambulances, two rapid response vehicles and two helicopters. Two operations managers also attended.

Two patients were flown to Waikato Hospital and three others taken via ambulance to Tauranga Hospital.

Police said they received a report of the accident about 5.40pm.

The Serious Crash Unit has been advised.

SH2 is blocked and diversions are in place at the intersections of SH2, Trig Rd South and Waihī Beach Rd.

Earlier,  6.15pm: Emergency services are responding to a two vehicle crash on State Highway 2 near Tauranga Road in Waihī.

"Emergency services received the report about 5.40pm," a police spokesperson said.

Initial indications suggest there are serious injuries.

The Serious Crash Unit has been advised.

SH2 is blocked and diversions are in place at the intersections of SH2, Trig Road South and Waihi Beach Road.

Motorists are advised by NZTA Waka Kotahi to take the alternative route.

Northbound Traffic: Turn Left onto Old Tauranga Rd, Right onto Frankton Rd, Continue onto Victoria St, Left onto Kenny St, before rejoining SH2. Southbound Traffic: as per above in reverse. This route is not useable for HPMVs/Vehicles over 44T
