Two commercial buildings in Opōtiki have been destroyed in a large fire overnight.

Fire crews were called to the buildings on Church Street in the Bay of Plenty town shortly before 11.30 on Sunday.

The fire covered 15 metres by 8 metres at its peak.

Eight fire trucks were at the scene.

The fire was at risk of spreading to other buildings, but was under control by about 3am on Monday.

A fire investigator was looking into the cause of the blaze.
