Swimming New Zealand is urging Kiwis to prioritise learning to swim to enhance water safety.

The national sporting body is running a campaign named ‘Unlock Your Greatness’, which aims to get more people swimming more often, and help New Zealanders be safer in the water.

Swimming New Zealand CEO Steve Johns says learning to swim is an asset for life.

“Unfortunately, the tragic drownings and water-related incidents we’ve seen already this summer are a stark reminder of the importance of learning to swim,” said Johns.

“Swimming is an incredibly important skill in New Zealand. It’s not just a skill that could save your life, but also a skill that unlocks endless opportunities in and around the water that last a lifetime.”

Johns is encouraging every New Zealander who is able to, to learn to swim. He says there are swim schools all around the country taking enrolments for term one.

“With term one commencing in a few weeks, now is the perfect time to give your child—or yourself—the gift of swimming. Lessons are available across the country for all ages and skill levels.

“We want every New Zealander to be confident and capable in and around the water. Learning to swim is an asset for life and we are urging everyone to unlock their greatness by learning to swim.”
